NSW: Two police officers charged with drug offences

SYDNEY, Dec 18 AAP - Two country NSW police officers have been charged with supplying steroids and "hillbilly heroin", as well as for forging a doctor's prescription.

The male and female senior constables attached to a local area command in the Tamworth region were arrested on Thursday about 9.30am (AEDT), police said.

The male officer was charged with supplying and possessing steroids and supplying the prohibited drug Oxycontin.

Oxycontin is a version of Oxycodone - a morphine-based medication prescribed to people suffering cancer or other debilitating conditions. The painkiller has been dubbed "hillbilly heroin"

He also was charged with unauthorised possession of ammunition and forging or altering a prescription.

The female officer was charged with two counts of possessing steroids and one count of forging or altering a prescription.

Both were conditionally bailed to appear at Armidale Local Court on February 4, 2009.

A police spokesman said both officers had been suspended.
